FROM ANDROMEDA AND BACK RADIO: SKIES THAT DO NOT FADE

I remember being in Chicago back in the day, listening to an FM rock station. After a bevy of alternative rock, the DJ suddenly put on the Waltz from Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake. At the art store where I worked, one of the young hipsters immediately yelled, "Tchaikovsky!" and began conducting with her hands. I'll never forget that moment. We had gone from, say, Throwing Muses to Tchaikovsky, and I remember thinking: How cool was that? Here was music making its own case. It didn't plead. It didn't demand. In its own way, it rocked. And then, after that glorious interlude, it was back to alternative rock. The funny thing was that the classical piece had not seemed out of place. It held its own. It brought to the table its own heft, its own weight. It wasn't preachy. It wasn't better than. It was simply another fiber in the fabric of the day. And maybe that's the way great music should be heard. Not fenced off by genre. Not placed behind glass. Not approa...

TERRA FIRMA DEEP HISTORY: THE "GIFT" THEY LEFT BEHIND

The First aliens, though throttled by the Second alien invasion, did not go gently into that good night.

They had spent a hundred years building a paradise colony on Earth, exploiting the planet for its considerable mineral wealth. They planned to use Earth's land masses to settle members of their numerous race and turn the planet into a way station for the conquest of other worlds. Life was good. The opposition, though numerous, was negligible—and could be counted on to provide a steady dietary staple for their Tyrannosaur pets.

The future was ever shining.

But often, near every paradise, an envious hell lurks, waiting for its chance to spoil and conquer.

The Second alien race, striking from another reality, had seemingly come out of nowhere. In secret, they had studied the First aliens. They knew their weaknesses. And when the time was right, they pounced.

The result was an ugly, brutal slaughter, for the Second aliens gave no quarter and asked for none. Smashed, panicked, their defenses broken, the First aliens headed for the exits in a mad dash to escape to their home planet.

But what the victors did not know was that they had beaten a race that, though not as martial as the Second aliens had proved to be, was nevertheless highly advanced in areas that had very little to do with warfare.

The First aliens were masters of the scan—masters at taking the measure of an opponent's very makeup.

And so, as they fled their paradise, they made a tactical move that nearly unraveled the invaders' victory march.

They poisoned the skies.

Whatever the First aliens had done, its effects were devastating. The Second aliens, seemingly unstoppable only moments before, suddenly found themselves wrecked and immensely humbled.

The First aliens had left behind a little "gift." Though most of them would not be around to witness its effects, they knew they had thrown a monkey wrench directly into the gears of victory.

The great question now was this: faced with an unsuspected counterattack that threatened their very survival, what would the conquerors do?

Neither race intended to surrender Earth.

And the Second aliens' response would ultimately shape the battle for the planet that Gunz and Lucky would find themselves fighting thousands of years later.
