FROM ANDROMEDA AND BACK RADIO: SKIES THAT DO NOT FADE

I remember being in Chicago back in the day, listening to an FM rock station. After a bevy of alternative rock, the DJ suddenly put on the Waltz from Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake. At the art store where I worked, one of the young hipsters immediately yelled, "Tchaikovsky!" and began conducting with her hands. I'll never forget that moment. We had gone from, say, Throwing Muses to Tchaikovsky, and I remember thinking: How cool was that? Here was music making its own case. It didn't plead. It didn't demand. In its own way, it rocked. And then, after that glorious interlude, it was back to alternative rock. The funny thing was that the classical piece had not seemed out of place. It held its own. It brought to the table its own heft, its own weight. It wasn't preachy. It wasn't better than. It was simply another fiber in the fabric of the day. And maybe that's the way great music should be heard. Not fenced off by genre. Not placed behind glass. Not approa...

TERRA FIRMA DEEP HISTORY: THE REIGN OF TERROR

 Tahiti 4400 B.C.

If the first aliens were the Huns, the second alien invasion was the Mongol hordes.

The first invaders had committed dastardly acts of their own. They had cloned Tyrannosaur DNA, creating giant pets to terrorize early human populations and keep them away from alien settlements. But the second invaders had something far more sinister in mind.

They captured humans not to feed them to tyrannosaurs, but to experiment on them—to manipulate human DNA and attempt to merge it with the DNA of various animals found on Earth.

If the first aliens were standoffish as they attempted to build an empire on Earth, the second aliens were students of a far more sinister game. They were here to enslave, torture, and reduce the human population to either a servile existence or outright destruction.

This Reign of Terror was not intended as some temporary state necessary to usher in a new world. It was meant to be permanent. Unshakable. A condition unrivaled in its utter despair.

It was to be simply "the state of things" from now on.

The first aliens had taken Earth piece by piece, beginning in the American Southwest around 4500 B.C. The second aliens were greedy from the start—and stayed that way.

Around 4400 B.C., they smashed the first aliens in their American outposts, wiping away a hundred years of relative peace and safety for those first invaders.

Until it wasn't.

Then, without pausing, the newcomers ranged across the entire Earth—from the northern reaches to the southernmost lands, from the Americas to the islands scattered across the vast Pacific.

Ancient peoples knew there was trouble afoot.

Word had spread in that strange, mysterious way information could travel through the ancient world—across tribes, across territories, across oceans, passed from one people to another until distant populations could know that something terrible was happening far beyond their own horizons.

They had heard.
They had feared.
And they thought they were ready.

They were not.

Across the whole Earth, the second aliens imposed something humanity had never experienced before: a total, inescapable
Reign of Terror.
