THREE WOMEN VS THE GALAXY: JENNIFER "GUNZ" ROCKER

But a Karen Carpenter-like voice is only the starting point. Gunz also leans into, and channels, the stylists whose sound sits closer to her own heart.

Rachel Lloyd! Some of you remember Simplicity 2000, the album that set the bar for easy, swinging downtempo. She was one of the glorious voices gracing Steven Miller's sublime concoction, back in the era of Portishead, Thievery Corporation, and the slow, sun-warmed embrace of Balearic chillout. It was the age of Hed Kandi, when the coolest sounds refreshed every head they filled. Rachel's turn on "Breather" gives you a taste of what Gunz and Lucky loved to cover:

Tracey Thorn is the perfect bookend to Gunz's voice: low, sultry, smooth, and penetrating. Here, on the Massive Attack masterpiece "Protection," she reaches the sublime:
And there's no fall-off with Ahu, the low-slung stylist who refreshes every heart on her and Flying Lotus' exquisite "Roberta Flack:"
In a novel where great evil is closing in fast, music lifts the burden. It's the one thing that gives the powers of darkness pause, that frustrates them to no end — because no matter how dark the challenge, humans always find a way to be happy, even in the middle of terror.
Thus Gunz, and her exquisite voice. Ahem — but she also packs not one, not two, but THREE (3!) 9mm Sig Sauers, plus a Smith & Wesson Bodyguard revolver!
