FROM ANDROMEDA AND BACK RADIO: SKIES THAT DO NOT FADE

I remember being in Chicago back in the day, listening to an FM rock station. After a bevy of alternative rock, the DJ suddenly put on the Waltz from Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake. At the art store where I worked, one of the young hipsters immediately yelled, "Tchaikovsky!" and began conducting with her hands. I'll never forget that moment. We had gone from, say, Throwing Muses to Tchaikovsky, and I remember thinking: How cool was that? Here was music making its own case. It didn't plead. It didn't demand. In its own way, it rocked. And then, after that glorious interlude, it was back to alternative rock. The funny thing was that the classical piece had not seemed out of place. It held its own. It brought to the table its own heft, its own weight. It wasn't preachy. It wasn't better than. It was simply another fiber in the fabric of the day. And maybe that's the way great music should be heard. Not fenced off by genre. Not placed behind glass. Not approa...

FROM ANDROMEDA AND BACK: AUTHOR'S DESK: WE'RE NOW ON GOODREADS



First of all, I want to thank you for joining this merry, mad band of followers. I hope you're enjoying the site, and I especially hope you're enjoying Terra Firma. (If so, give it a rating on Amazon if you can find the time. It would really help me out.) I so appreciate you all—you have no idea how much.

If you've been following along here, you know I like to wander—into the music, the movies, the little tributaries that feed into Terra Firma. I've opened up a second spot for some of that wandering: a blog over on my Goodreads author page.

The first post is called "On World Building"—a look at what it actually takes to build a convincing world, from Dante's Inferno to Shakespeare's fairy realms to, yes, Casablanca's Rick's Café. I make the case for Terra Firma somewhere in there too.

On From Andromeda And Back, we want to tempt, entice, dazzle (if we can), and delight you with the possibilities of not only Terra Firma, but of an escape from the rigors of your day. We want to be a friend and a companion that never intrudes, but hopes, in its own small way, to be one of the good things you encounter on a busy day.

That's why From Andromeda And Back ranges over music, literature, scary things, the people caught up in it all, and an expansive map where anything can happen—in the good sense. There's always another road to wander down, another sound to hear, another story to discover.
