FROM ANDROMEDA AND BACK RADIO: SKIES THAT DO NOT FADE

I remember being in Chicago back in the day, listening to an FM rock station. After a bevy of alternative rock, the DJ suddenly put on the Waltz from Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake. At the art store where I worked, one of the young hipsters immediately yelled, "Tchaikovsky!" and began conducting with her hands. I'll never forget that moment. We had gone from, say, Throwing Muses to Tchaikovsky, and I remember thinking: How cool was that? Here was music making its own case. It didn't plead. It didn't demand. In its own way, it rocked. And then, after that glorious interlude, it was back to alternative rock. The funny thing was that the classical piece had not seemed out of place. It held its own. It brought to the table its own heft, its own weight. It wasn't preachy. It wasn't better than. It was simply another fiber in the fabric of the day.  Incomparable 

Our reach should clearly exceed our grasp. If not, there is no reason for From Andromeda And Back Radio.

We're star-stepping here — going for it because we know we have the fans who not only can take it but, in their own way, love it!

Shirley Bassey. Singular. Indestructible. Undefeated. The voice that snaps and bites like Eartha Kitt and then opens up with a mountain shout that goes from peak to peak.

In 1997, that voice landed in the middle of a scrappy little electronic outfit's biggest moment. The Propellerheads had their run — sharp, strutting, briefly everywhere — and then, like most bands riding a sound instead of a song, they moved on. But "History Repeating," off their album Decksandrumsandrockandroll, never got the memo. It had that something, from a time when anything was possible. When magic happened.

And this video is beyond wacky. It is incredibly, deliciously silly and captivating. The staid, conservative studio execs show just a hint of rhythm and snap their fingers, trying to “get with it.” The staid engineers try to resist but slide into head-spinning breakdances, while the moderator remains stiff and proper throughout.
