FROM ANDROMEDA AND BACK RADIO: SKIES THAT DO NOT FADE

I remember being in Chicago back in the day, listening to an FM rock station. After a bevy of alternative rock, the DJ suddenly put on the Waltz from Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake. At the art store where I worked, one of the young hipsters immediately yelled, "Tchaikovsky!" and began conducting with her hands. I'll never forget that moment. We had gone from, say, Throwing Muses to Tchaikovsky, and I remember thinking: How cool was that? Here was music making its own case. It didn't plead. It didn't demand. In its own way, it rocked. And then, after that glorious interlude, it was back to alternative rock. The funny thing was that the classical piece had not seemed out of place. It held its own. It brought to the table its own heft, its own weight. It wasn't preachy. It wasn't better than. It was simply another fiber in the fabric of the day. And maybe that's the way great music should be heard. Not fenced off by genre. Not placed behind glass. Not approa...

TERRA FIRMA ALIEN ENHANCEMENTS: THE TERRIFYING RIDE

Yes, “ride.”

For Shifty is not merely walking toward the monstrous, alien-enhanced Hooker telescope, now transformed into a behemoth of terrifying proportions.

She must walk through that door.

And then...

Well, she has to do it.

In many ways, much will depend upon her journey.

Shifty—aka “Shift-Shape”—is Deputy Sharon Brown, the brainy IT member of Sgt. Vasquez’s hard-fighting crew. But during an alien scrum, Shifty became convinced that she had let her deputy sisters down.

She hadn’t.

But that doesn’t matter when you believe you have.

Her soul is stained by the thought that when the others were warring, she showed weakness. The others don’t see it that way. Shifty does. And sometimes the most unforgiving judge imaginable is the one staring back at you from the mirror.

Now comes her reckoning.

She has given her weapons to Sarge.

There will be no shotgun.

No pistol.

No firepower to reassure her.

Just Shifty.

And that door.

Beyond it waits an awful journey into something she cannot possibly understand. Much will depend upon what she does there. Whatever happens, nobody can make this journey for her.

Only Shifty can take the ride.

Look at her.

She is terrified.

She is afraid.

And she walks toward the monster anyway.

Because courage isn’t the absence of fear.

Sometimes courage is simply knowing that you are frightened out of your wits—

still the door must open and you must go through it.
