FROM ANDROMEDA AND BACK RADIO: SKIES THAT DO NOT FADE

I remember being in Chicago back in the day, listening to an FM rock station. After a bevy of alternative rock, the DJ suddenly put on the Waltz from Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake. At the art store where I worked, one of the young hipsters immediately yelled, "Tchaikovsky!" and began conducting with her hands. I'll never forget that moment. We had gone from, say, Throwing Muses to Tchaikovsky, and I remember thinking: How cool was that? Here was music making its own case. It didn't plead. It didn't demand. In its own way, it rocked. And then, after that glorious interlude, it was back to alternative rock. The funny thing was that the classical piece had not seemed out of place. It held its own. It brought to the table its own heft, its own weight. It wasn't preachy. It wasn't better than. It was simply another fiber in the fabric of the day. And maybe that's the way great music should be heard. Not fenced off by genre. Not placed behind glass. Not approa...

TERRA FIRMA ALIEN ENHANCEMENTS: YOU'RE BEING WATCHED

 The sex was great.

The money was greater.

The stimulants—both smoking and pill—were through the roof.

And the best part?

They were healthy!

Who ever heard of that?

Drugs that made you soar through the skies. Stimulants that made you witty and yet left you completely in control. Drugs that did not impair your driving. Your mind was delightfully blown—without harm to your body or mind in any way.

Then more sex.

Beautiful women.

Earth-shaking joy.

And more money. Secretly uploaded to an account shielded from prying government eyes. More money than you could ever have hoped for.

And your part?

All you have to do is this one little thing.

Easy.

Peasy.

A child could do it.

And so you do.

Then, somewhere down the road, come the doubts.

You want to cut back.

Maybe you want to get away altogether.

And that's when you begin to realize something.

Perhaps none of it was ever really yours.

Not the money.

Not the pleasure.

Not the wonderful little stimulants.

Perhaps they weren't gifts at all.

Perhaps they were leashes.

And then you discover the horrible secret.

You are let in on terrors.

Terrors that explain every leash you never saw.

And suddenly you understand the bargain you made.

You understand who you've been working for.

You understand what that one little, easy-peasy thing was actually helping to accomplish.

So now you want out.

Except...

there is no out.

Because when you accepted everything they offered, something was watching.

When you did what they asked, something was watching.

And when you began having second thoughts...

something was watching.

Then one night you're standing alone in your bathroom.

You look into the mirror.

And there you are—

with no escape.
