FROM ANDROMEDA AND BACK RADIO: SKIES THAT DO NOT FADE

I remember being in Chicago back in the day, listening to an FM rock station. After a bevy of alternative rock, the DJ suddenly put on the Waltz from Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake. At the art store where I worked, one of the young hipsters immediately yelled, "Tchaikovsky!" and began conducting with her hands. I'll never forget that moment. We had gone from, say, Throwing Muses to Tchaikovsky, and I remember thinking: How cool was that? Here was music making its own case. It didn't plead. It didn't demand. In its own way, it rocked. And then, after that glorious interlude, it was back to alternative rock. The funny thing was that the classical piece had not seemed out of place. It held its own. It brought to the table its own heft, its own weight. It wasn't preachy. It wasn't better than. It was simply another fiber in the fabric of the day. And maybe that's the way great music should be heard. Not fenced off by genre. Not placed behind glass. Not approa...

TERRA FIRMA: TALKING THAT TALK

Gunz shouts:

"Unmesswitable!"

Without missing a beat, Lucky answers:

"Undefeated!"

Then they march straight toward whatever impossible situation awaits them.

That's Gunz and Lucky. Even in the midst of danger and unimaginable horror, they remain what they've always been.

Sisters from another mother.

They're different in almost every way, yet somehow their emotional DNA seems fused together. Their bond was forged through adventures, danger, laughter, shared purpose, and the unshakable feeling that both of these only children had finally found the sister they'd been looking for all their lives.

That connection comes through in the way they speak throughout Terra Firma.

Nobody talks quite like Gunz and Lucky because there is nobody quite like Gunz and Lucky.

They may be Los Angeles County Sheriff's deputies, but they have a style, a swagger, and a language all their own.

Take their undercover band, The Knockoutz.

They mean every letter of that name.

Throughout Terra Firma, you can actually "hear" many of their performances through the music that inspired them. (Check out the Terra Firma Playlists here on the site.) One favorite is their downtempo reimagining of The Nylons' unforgettable version of "Remember (Walking in the Sand)."

Lucky slows the groove just enough.

Then Gunz slides in with a pleading...

"Oh, no... no... no..."

The well-heeled crowd at Pasadena's Edgemont Place Hotel absolutely loses it.

But music isn't the only language the sisters share.

They have expressions all their own.

When they're teasing each other...

One says:

"You're awful!"

The reply comes instantly.

"You're ridiculous!"

Or...

"You're goofy!"

When they're completely exasperated...

One scrunches up her face and groans:

"EEEEEEEE!"

The comeback?

Another exaggerated scrunched face and:

"AAAAAAAA!!"

No translation required.

The beautiful thing is that even as the darkness around them grows almost unimaginable, none of this disappears.

In the end, it isn't just their courage, intelligence, or determination that keeps them going.

It's their bond as sisters.

Real sisters.

It's their love for one another.

It's their devotion to serving others and doing the public good.

Because in a universe filled with monsters...

sometimes the strongest force of all...

is family.
