FROM ANDROMEDA AND BACK RADIO — THE LONGPLAY: BLACKEST BLUE
From time to time, you just want to swing it. You want to hit play and, as Smokey says, "let the music take your mind." So we present The Longplay posts. Every so often, From Andromeda and Back Radio will simply invite you to sit back and let the music take your mind.
Morcheeba needs no introduction for some. For others, they are interesting because they cover such a jumble of genres — and they become even more interesting the harder you try to pin them down. R&B, trip-hop, alternative, downtempo, jazzy, smooth, mellow, swinging — all of these genres smashed into a potpourri we simply designate as "cool," which is the best place to be when talking about the multi-flavored Morcheeba.
The fabulous Skye Edwards is one of the world's great slept-on voices. Vigorous, chill, searching. Place her and that voice anywhere, up against anyone, and she will more than hold her own. Ross Godfrey's beats and production are sly and perfectly sculpted to accent Skye's voice. He knows when to swing and when to chill.
All in all, it's the perfect kick-back, clean-the-house, evening-with-friends-over-dinner record. But Blackest Blue is something else, too — a moving, stimulating work. Even parked at your desk, writing whatever, put it on and it becomes not just a companion but a friend.
So hit play and let Morcheeba take you there — wherever that may be.
