TERRA FIRMA DEEP HISTORY: DARKNESS ARRIVES
What were they?
The First Aliens had had their way for a hundred years.
It had been a cakewalk.
And now…
these black ships in the sky.
No light reflected off their hulls. Not one glint. Not one flare of sun on metal.
The black only deepened, swallowing every ray that touched it.
Surely…
The First Aliens' scans of the Milky Way had revealed nothing. They knew the civilizations that had been eyeing Earth. They knew their capabilities. They knew their ambitions.
And those civilizations knew better.
They stayed away.
But these black ships…
From another galaxy, perhaps?
The First Aliens were ready for that too.
They knew that other galaxies—Triangulum among them—were home to treacherous, predatory empires. There were the dreaded Ciagallim, for example, who had conquered some eight solar systems in their own galaxy.
But even an intergalactic challenge did not particularly frighten the First Aliens.
They were prepared for such things.
Or so they thought.
The First Aliens were students of the game of conquest. They understood expansion. They understood invasion. They understood the ambitions of powerful civilizations and remained alert to any challenge to their supremacy.
Or were they?
Because these enormous black ships now populating Earth's skies had sent the First Aliens into a frenzy.
Were they peaceful?
Hostile?
Where had they come from?
How had they not been detected?
What was their intention?
It was the mystery of it all that made the First Aliens tremble.
Visitors.
From places unknown.
Cruising freely over Earth.
Their Earth.
And slowly, horribly, the First Aliens began to understand something.
They now knew what Earth's primitive peoples had experienced a hundred years before.
Strange ships appearing in the sky.
Saying nothing.
Announcing nothing.
Offering no explanation.
The First Aliens themselves had once arrived that way in their saucer-like vessels.
Then they had struck.
They had carved out Earth for themselves.
They had taken what they wanted.
And now came these strange black vessels.
No one knew where they had come from.
No data could be gleaned from any known world about their origins.
No familiar configuration.
No recognized civilization.
Nothing.
The First Aliens sensed trouble.
And perhaps, somewhere beneath all that science, all that technology, all that arrogance, an ugly thought finally presented itself:
What if what they had done to the humans of Earth…
…was now about to be done to them?
They waited.
They prepared.
They trembled.
The humans in their cages stared upward.
Even the great tyrannosaur pets lifted their enormous heads toward the sky.
These ships!
These damnable ships!
They responded to no communication.
They refused every hail.
Warning craft were sent up.
Ignored.
Threats were transmitted.
Ignored.
The black ships offered nothing.
No greeting.
No demand.
No warning.
Not even light. The sun struck them and died there, swallowed whole.
They simply continued their silent advance.
These ships! These damnable ships!
They kept coming on...
