FROM ANDROMEDA AND BACK RADIO: SKIES THAT DO NOT FADE

I remember being in Chicago back in the day, listening to an FM rock station. After a bevy of alternative rock, the DJ suddenly put on the Waltz from Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake. At the art store where I worked, one of the young hipsters immediately yelled, "Tchaikovsky!" and began conducting with her hands. I'll never forget that moment. We had gone from, say, Throwing Muses to Tchaikovsky, and I remember thinking: How cool was that? Here was music making its own case. It didn't plead. It didn't demand. In its own way, it rocked. And then, after that glorious interlude, it was back to alternative rock. The funny thing was that the classical piece had not seemed out of place. It held its own. It brought to the table its own heft, its own weight. It wasn't preachy. It wasn't better than. It was simply another fiber in the fabric of the day. And maybe that's the way great music should be heard. Not fenced off by genre. Not placed behind glass. Not approa...

TERRA FIRMA DEEP HISTORY: THE LOST ONES AND THEIR HORRIBLE FATE

Earth in the Dock--around 4,500 B.C.

There was a time when the stars did not seem so threatening.

There was a time when space was not an endless sea punctuated by distant, cold, and mocking lights.

There was a time when the galaxies seemed inviting.

Welcoming, even.

We were Voyagers.

We crossed the darkness not to conquer, but to learn.

Not to possess, but to understand.

We charted the hidden roads between worlds.

The liminal passageways.

They were never meant to carry armies.

Only travelers.

Only knowledge.

Only hope.

Then...

One of our leaders listened to a voice that should never have been heard.

He was promised glory beyond imagining.

Not a throne.

Something far more dangerous.

He would become the doorway to another's throne.

He accepted.

And he betrayed us all.

Earth was never meant to become our prison.

When we arrived, another alien civilization had already claimed the planet. Humanity did not know it, but it already lived beneath the shadow of conquest. Earth was being stripped of its riches while its people were slowly being prepared for slavery.

At first, these aliens dismissed us.

We were peaceful.

We carried no weapons.

Only knowledge.

Knowledge of the liminal passageways.

Knowledge they did not possess.

Knowledge they quickly learned to exploit.

The hidden roads we had opened for discovery became roads they coveted for conquest.

We protested.

We pleaded.

We failed.

Some of us were slaughtered for resisting.

The rest were reduced to slavery.

Our captors now had what they wanted.

The gifts we had carried across the stars became the chains that bound us.

And then...

The skies broke open.
